Holy Places - What is sacred?
Between Declaration and Appearance
In the first image, sacredness arises from what is natural and elemental: traditional boats rest on the beach, held together by sea and sky. In the second image, the sacred is explicitly named. The pink boat bears the words "Holy Place". Yet rubbish lies in front of it. The sign asserts what the visible reality simultaneously denies. The pairing does not establish a simple opposition between pure and impure. It shows how a concept loses its certainty as soon as it encounters material reality.
