The Beach as a Collective Body of Feeling

Bali is often perceived as an idyll. Yet the reality I see every day is more complex. It is lived jointly by local people, expatriates and travellers. Nature, ritual, tourism, consumption and waste do not appear one after another, but at the same time.

My photographs reveal these ruptures. Precious nature encounters cheap, human-made material. Offerings and ceremonies are performed with great constancy, while waste, construction and change remain equally persistent. Neither cancels out the other.

The images were made spontaneously with a mobile phone. The decision of when to release the shutter often occurs before conscious thought. Only in retrospect did the connecting thread become visible: the beach as a threshold and as a collective body of feeling - a place where perception, use and memory meet.

My personal pain-body has long since dissolved. It is precisely this that allows me to turn my gaze outward and recognize compositions that no one intended. They contain the collective pain-body of grief, anger, and fear in the face of change in Bali, but also wonder, beauty, and the power of enduring rituals.
